History

On 17 May 2004 the Pan African Burn Society (PABS) was founded.  Delegates to the first PABS congress held in Cape Town from 16 to 19 May 2004 decided to establish this new society and elected a committee to take matters forward.

 

As president of the International Society for Burn Injuries (ISBI), Dr Naoki Aikawa welcomed the establishment of this new society.  Dr Aikawa said that Africa was the last continent to form a regional society.

The second congress was held on 16-18 January 2007 at the Congress Center, Assiut University, Assiut in Egypt under the auspices of the Assiut University Hospital, International Society for Burn Injuries (ISBI), Assiut Burn Program and the Egyptian Society for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons.

The third congress was held under the auspice of the Nigerian Burn Society in collaboration with the Nigerian Association for Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons, the Pan African Association for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons and the ISBI. It took place in Lagos, Nigeria, on 7-11 December 2008 with the theme: Management of Burn Disasters.  The sub-theme was: Plastic Surgery Practice in Africa.

Aim of the Society

Our aim is to:

  • prevent burns;

  • encourage the highest standards of burn care;

  • disseminate knowledge and encourage involvement in each African country, and

  • to offer leadership and advice that is appropriate for African countries.

Affiliation

The PABS is fully affiliated with the International Society for Burn Injuries (ISBI).
